Current Roles

Chief Executive Officer
Salary: £70,000

The National Benevolent Charity is looking to appoint a new Chief Executive to manage all aspects of the organisation from the assessment of applications to its strategic direction.

The charity was founded in 1812 and is governed by royal charter. Its charitable objective is the relief of poverty. It performs this function by making financial payments or by giving goods in kind to people in great need; by operating almshouse-type accommodation in Tetbury and Old Windsor; and by making grants to other charitable organisations. Its income is derived from its investment fund (approx. value £15m) and rents from its accommodation centres.

The staff consists of a small team of dedicated people, operating at Tetbury and Old Windsor.

The Chief Executive’s role principally comprises:

– The supervision of staff in the running of the sheltered accommodation centres.

– The administration of the charity’s Benevolence programme, including the assessment of applications and the exercise of discretion either to refuse or make an award or to allow an application to go forward for approval by the trustees’ Benevolence committee, with an appropriate recommendation.

– The engagement with charitable organisations in Bristol, for example foodbanks or sheltered establishments for the homeless, and the making of recommendations to the trustees for the provision of grants to such organisations. This is a new venture and the trustees are keen for the Chief Executive to explore the potential for its expansion.

Essential skills:

  • Sound business management experience to include strategic planning and day to day operations.
  • Financial skills sufficient to prepare a budget and to monitor and control its implementation.
  • A working knowledge of Social Housing policy and the Social Welfare system.
  • Experience of direct accountability to a Board of directors or trustees.
  • Experience of Governance and Compliance.

Personal attributes:

  • An instinctive and sure touch in dealing with a variety of people.
  • An enthusiasm for the work of charities and voluntary organisations.
  • A strong empathy with vulnerable people and those in need.
  • A positive “can do” and “hands on” approach.
  • Sound judgement.

Opportunity

This is an ideal time to join The National Benevolent Charity, a well-funded and long-established charity, following the retirement of Paul Rossi later this year. There will be a high level of independence and autonomy and the expectation is that the role can be completed in 4 days per week.

If you have the personal attributes and experience required, please send a detailed application using the form below.
