Lincoln Cathedral
The Cathedral Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Lincoln (to give it its proper title) is first and foremost a church, the seat of the Bishop of Lincoln and a centre of worship and mission. It is the principal church of Lincolnshire and holds many of the county-wide services of celebration, commemoration and memorial. Lincoln Cathedral is the only cathedral in the country which is on the Historic England Heritage at Risk Register in its entirety. A significant proportion of the Cathedral budget is spent each year on its maintenance and repair. Furthermore, the historic properties and walls which form the precinct require maintenance and development in order that they can provide a net income to support the mission, ministry and maintenance of the Cathedral. The building and its precincts are overseen by the ‘Masters of the Fabric’, who are the Dean and the Subdean. It is the Subdean who takes day-to-day responsibility for oversight of the fabric on behalf of Chapter and manages the post of Director of Works & Property.
The Works Department
Lincoln is one of only a few Cathedrals in England to have its own workforce dedicated to the conservation of the building – this team is within the Cathedral’s ‘Works Department’. There are five craft teams within this Department: Stonemasonry and Conservation, Glazing, Carpentry/Joinery, Leadwork and Domus (Engineering and Maintenance). The Department has its own Archivist and is supported by a small office team.
