Our client is an established, successful and well-respected manufacturer in the defence sector. They operate as a Prime Defence Contractor and have supplied the UK MOD and numerous other armed forces across the world with high quality products and solutions for decades.

Their expertise, built on engineering excellence and innovation, includes concept design, prototype manufacture and full-scale production of products for use in the military sector.

Managing Director – The Role

The Managing Director will report directly to the Group and will lead the management team with full strategic, sales growth, operational and P&L responsibilities.

The MD will successfully lead the business, developing existing and new international defence client relationships. The MD will lead the strategic development and diversification by working in partnership with the parent Group. This partnership will include product diversification with manufacturing expansion, possibly to include the establishment of further manufacturing sites.

Key Requirements for the Role

Qualifications

Graduate probably within an engineering or technical discipline, possibly supported by a business qualification. 

Experience:

  • A proven business leader, likely to be an experienced MD, or Divisional Director with P&L responsibility.
  • Candidates will have gained international experience either within the defence contracting sector or possibly within related sectors providing high value products to defence or government agencies.
  • Candidates’ experience will have been gained in manufacturing environments. It is likely to be high value specification manufacturing.
  • Candidates will have proven experience of successfully winning complex commercial contracts with defence and government agencies where lead times can be long.
  • Good mix of manufacturing experience with a strong commercial/sales background.
  • A charismatic leader who clearly demonstrates an ability to empower and motivate a team.
  • Ability to manage risk, design/engineering and health and safety.
  • Exceptional skills in communication, motivation, and interpersonal relations, and able to convey a message that is understandable and relevant, linking business issues, financial results and strategy.
  • Experience of operating at the highest level of professionalism and personal integrity.
  • The successful candidate will have a passion for continuous improvement, and a strong sense of accountability.
