Managing Director (Water/Utilities/’Not for Profit’)
Salary: Circa £90,000 Salary with Benefits


Our client is an organisation that is involved within the water & sanitation services provision space for the urban poor. The organisation helps municipalities, utilities and independent service providers around the world tackle the challenges of rapid urbanisation and looks to improve life for millions of people who lack access to improved water and sanitation services. The organisation works with local and national governments and regulators to create favourable operating environments for service providers. The company also support and advise international finance institutions, international agencies and non-government institutions, corporations and foundations in investing in, or supporting water and sanitation improvement.

The Requirement – Managing Director

This exciting MD leadership role will suit someone who is skilled in consultancy and capable of contributing to and driving the success of an organisation like this.

Core Role & Responsibilities

  • Provide overall leadership and management of the organisation
  • Oversee the strategic development of the company providing both internal and external leadership
  • Manage the commercial, financial, administrative and people dimensions of the company
  • Lead business development through a commercial approach to bidding, consolidating and developing client and partner relationships and building a motivated team of world class experts and external consultants
  • Assure project delivery through leadership of projects and programmes as Project Director and through technical inputs to projects based on the MD’s own professional background
  • Develop the company’s external profile and brand through industry thought leadership and participation in industry forums
  • Build relationships with client and partner organisations, including financing organisations, private companies, NGOs, government agencies and utilities Improve internal processes for business development, project management and quality management
  • Ensure proper and effective budget monitoring and control process are in place to monitor performance, forecast performance, manage cash flow and measure profitability

Experience and Knowledge Needed

Essential

• Inspirational leadership and substantial senior management experience with a successful track record in perhaps a consulting organisation (maybe management or engineering) or a commercially orientated public enterprise

• A successful track record in representing an organisation at a national and international level and effectively building partnerships and developing and sustaining influential relationships with multiple stakeholders across sectors and nations

• Successful experience of leading and developing organisations and/or companies and developing and implementing strategic plans

• Experience of working within complex budgets and diverse income streams, an ability to develop effective financial strategies and skills in identifying and implementing new business development opportunities

• Accomplished at managing a wide range of stakeholders on a national and international level

• A ‘hands-on’, ‘can-do’ and pragmatic attitude, willing to go the extra mile to achieve results

• Willingness to travel internationally

Desirable

• Building and managing a consultancy company or a division of such a company

• Water and sanitation in emerging markets experience

• Dealing with bilateral and multilateral donors, private sector social responsibility programmes and large non-governmental organisations

• An enthusiastic proponent of international development particularly water and sanitation
