About Us

Our client has spent over 50 years establishing themselves as a leading, highly respected specialist aviation business. Built on a foundation of operational excellence, safety, and sustainable growth, they support VIP charter, Emergency Medical Services (EMS), pilot training, and critical government/defence operations.

To accelerate their next growth trajectory, both organically and through strategic acquisition, they are looking to appoint a sharp, mission-focused Commercial Director to join their Senior Management Team.

The Role

As Commercial Director, you will take full accountability for the commercial management and delivery of our active, high-profile aviation and defence programmes. Operating within a fast-paced, multi-functional environment, you will lead our commercial strategy across the entire lifecycle; from market identification and initial bidding to contract execution, variation management and closure. There will also be the opportunity for involvement in the development of the aircraft sales process.

This is a high-profile leadership role that demands exceptional stakeholder management. You will be a champion of an agile, outcome-focused culture that avoids unnecessary bureaucracy, ensuring strict corporate governance without sacrificing commercial velocity.

Key Responsibilities

  • Commercial Leadership & Strategy: Own and deliver the sub-business area Commercial Strategy. Actively drive new business activities, structure robust teaming/partnership agreements, and steer major contract proposals (£M+).
  • M&A Exploration: Proactively identify, evaluate, and target areas for strategic acquisition to accelerate company growth.
  • Contract Governance & Negotiation: Lead the creation, review, and negotiation of complex contractual documents. Dynamically manage internal Gating processes and maintain flawless compliance with regulatory frameworks.
  • Risk & Dispute Resolution: Dynamically manage contractual risks and opportunities. Interface closely with legal counsel to resolve complex disputes and administer contract change mechanisms under long-term agile frameworks.
  • Stakeholder & Relationship Management: Act as a trusted adviser to senior executive management. Influence diverse internal and external stakeholders, cross-functional partners, and global customers in a highly collaborative environment.
  • Active Board Member: A willingness to offer opinions and solutions on matters outside of the commercial area.

Who We Are Looking For

We are looking for an adaptable executive who possesses the drive to “get things done.” You are someone who thrives in highly collaborative spaces, treats challenges as lessons, and maintains operational excellence under pressure.

Your Experience Includes

  • Regulated Industry Expertise: A proven track record in a senior commercial or contracts management role, delivering sophisticated services or products within aerospace, defence, or a similarly regulated sector.
  • Public Sector or Government/Defence Procurement: A solid operational understanding of the UK Defence Procurement Regulations and MoD frameworks would be advantageous.
  • Air Ambulance: Experience of working with air ambulance charities would be of benefit.
  • Export Controls: Good working knowledge of UK and US export challenges and compliance frameworks (including ITAR/EAR).
  • Contractual Scale: Proven experience managing, negotiating, and delivering medium-to-high-value (£M+) complex agreements.
  • Leadership: Experience managing, coaching, and resourcing a small team of professional staff.
  • Vetting: Must hold, or be fully capable of obtaining Baseline Personal Security Screening (BPSS) with a view to achieving a security check, depending on contracts.
